Placement Test Results for Students Beginning Fall 2005
The following report documents and discusses placement test results for new students entering Athens campus in fall 2005. To place the data in proper context, please see the 10-year summary below.
MATH
The distribution of math placements for students entering in Fall 2005 shows a decrease of .95% in Math 263A (PL3) and 2.92% in Math 115/163A (PL2) placements. Placements in Math 101 (DV1) and Math 113/Tier 1 (PL1) show increases in placements of 2.13% and 1.74%.

WRITING
The optional English writing placement test was not offered as part of the 2005 Precollege Orientation, but was available during the first week of fall quarter. All entering students without advanced placement or other credit for freshman composition received the default placement, ENG 151/152/153. Eight students chose to take the waiver test, and one received the waiver.
READING
Beginning in 1998, ACT reading scores, rather than Nelson-Denny tests, have served as the basis for course recommendations at Precollege. Out of 4,165 newly enrolled freshmen for Fall 2005, 3,962 had ACT reading scores. Of these, 866 (21.85%) scored under 20 (out of 36) and so were considered below (college) grade level, an increase of .82% from the previous year’s class. They were advised to register for no more than one course requiring substantial reading and were strongly encouraged to take UC 112, College Reading Skills.
