"Ohio," says a National Public Radio producer, "is the center of the universe," and that's what prompted one of NPR's top news-talk shows to broadcast live from Ohio University on Thursday. Host Neal Conan brought "Talk of the Nation" to the WOUB Studios for a live broadcast.

Classified employees honored for service
More than 170 classified employees were recognized Thursday at Ohio University's 39th annual Classified Employee Service Awards Reception. The event was hosted by Classified Senate and sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration.
 
Study Abroad Fair set for Monday
The Office of Education Abroad will conduct Ohio University's 20th annual Study Abroad Fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday in the Grover Center Atrium. Students will have the opportunity to learn about studying, working, volunteering and interning in more than 30 countries around the globe.

Team continues work on conversion to semesters
Now that the Ohio University Board of Trustees has officially endorsed a conversion to semesters, members of a transition team are pressing forward on related issues, from changes to the academic calendar and revamping courses to budgeting for conversion costs.
 
A mini international film festival
Students in their second (and final) year of studies with the School of Film will present a screening of their seminal works at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Baker University Center Theatre. The event is free and open to the public.
 
A cultural melting pot
Musicians and dancers from both sides of the Atlantic will come together for an improvisation performance at 8 p.m. Monday in Glidden Hall. Marina Peterson, assistant professor of performance studies in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts, is the creator of a yearlong CircumAtlantic Improvisations series.
 
Regional campuses' enrollment grows by more than 6 percent
Increased enrollment on Ohio University's regional campuses -- 504 more students than last fall -- led all categories of enrollment growth this year. Overall, regional campus enrollment increased by about 6.5 percent to a total of 8,323 students.
 
Fall Career Fair attracts record number of employers
Despite a troubled economy, a record number of employers turned out for the Fall 2008 Career Fair. The Career Services event attracted 176 companies from across the country, including Microsoft, Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Ernst & Young and The J.M Smucker Co.

Ohio University leaders and managers who gathered Tuesday took an in-depth look at new initiatives that will help meet these objectives and others, all of which are designed to strengthen university operations and support the Vision OHIO academic plan.
 
Algae fuels new bioreactor [Research News]
Green Bios Technologies of Atlanta has licensed a new type of algae bioreactor from Ohio University. Loehr Professor of Mechanical Engineering David Bayless developed the bioreactor, which has potential applications in curbing air pollution, treating municipal waste and growing feedstock for biofuel or pharmaceutical uses.
 
University community mourns loss of online journalism student
Lianne Vernell, a fourth-year online journalism major, passed away Monday, Oct. 6, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus after suffering unexpected complications following a medical procedure.

'Talk of the Nation' to broadcast live from WOUB
National Public Radio host Neal Conan will explore Ohio's role in this year's presidential race when "Talk of the Nation" broadcasts live from Ohio University's WOUB radio studios Thursday afternoon. The show will air on WOUB-FM from 2 to 4 p.m. and will be streamed live on the WOUB Web site.
