Golf greats return to Athens [video] Nicklaus, Finsterwald return for dedication of historical marker Jun 3, 2009
Golf greats Jack Nicklaus and Athens native and Ohio University alumnus Dow Finsterwald returned to Athens late last week for the dedication of an Ohio Historical Marker commemorating the 50th anniversary of Dow Finsterwald Day and the first-ever match to be played between Nicklaus and rival Arnold Palmer at the club.
Dow Finsterwald Day was celebrated on Sept. 25, 1958, the same year that Finsterwald won the PGA Championship. The city of Athens celebrated his victory with a parade and an 18-hole exhibition match at the club between Palmer, Nicklaus, Finsterwald and local amateur Howard Baker Saunders from Gallapolis. The plaque, located at the entrance of the club, showcases the importance of the match between the four golfers and Finsterwald's championship.
