Dear Prospective Student:

Thank you for your interest in graduate education at Ohio University and the Interdisciplinary Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology. I want to strongly encourage you to complete your application as soon as possible. The graduate committee will begin to review your application as soon as it is complete. Let me tell you a little about Ohio University and the Interdisciplinary Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology. I am confident you will find that the educational and research experience here will meet your needs.

Ohio University was chartered in 1804 and opened its doors in 1808. Today, the university is a comprehensive, coeducational, state-assisted institution serving more than 28,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students on its main campus in Athens and its regional campuses. You will find the Athens campus has its own distinctive character, “looking like a college should look.” The impressive natural beauty of Southeastern Ohio adds yet another dimension that you will enjoy. At the graduate level, Ohio University offers masters’ and doctoral degrees in nearly all disciplines.

In 1994 the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of teaching designated Ohio University as a “Research University II,” one of only 125 of the 3,600 schools assessed by the foundation. This was a clear indication of the commitment of the faculty and administration to excellence in teaching and research, which you will find provides you with a top quality graduate education. The university’s main library, Alden library, houses 1.8 million bound volumes, 13,000 periodical subscriptions, and 2.4 million research items in its collection. As a member of OhioLink, the library offers students access to an additional three million volumes and full online access to most scientific journals with the ability to download articles directly to your computer.

The Interdisciplinary Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology was formed more than 20 years ago and offers the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees through the cooperative efforts of four departments: Biological Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, and Environmental and Plant Biology. This program was formed to prepare students like you for successful careers in academic instruction and research, as well as research and development in the biotechnology industry. Program faculty have advanced research facilities and a wide range of interests providing you with a broad range of intellectual and experimental approaches. All faculty are experienced in graduate education and are committed to providing you with individual attention. Program faculty teach the core curriculum in molecular and cellular biology, which will provide you with a firm grounding in biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, and modern techniques in molecular biology. If you are admitted, program support will help fund your research and will enable you to present your research at national meetings. The program will support you through either a teaching or research fellowship ($19,000 for Ph.D. students 2007-08) and you will receive a full tuition scholarship.
