About the Giving Gavel
Giving Gavels were made in 2004 from the wood of an ash tree from the College Green. Handcrafted by local artisan Mark Burhans, they are awarded to registered Ohio University student organizations whose members have made a personal financial commitment to support the Amanda Cunningham Leadership Center in the Baker University Center at Ohio University. In order for a student organization to be awarded a gavel, at least 80 percent of its members must make a personal gift to the University.
Each gavel is engraved with the Bicentennial Seal of the University along with the name of the organization. Gavels are presented publicly each spring at the Ohio University Leadership Recognition Reception, and all participating student organizations will be recognized on a plaque to be displayed in the Leadership Center.
As the gavels are passed down to future leaders of the organizations, they will commemorate not only the University’s Bicentennial but also the leadership of the groups’ current members.
The first five recipients of the Giving Gavel were recognized in 2004: · Student Senate · Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity · Women’s Panhellenic Association · Arts & Sciences Student Ambassadors · Interfraternity Council
2005 recipients were: | · Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity | · CoB Connect | | · Phi Alpha Delta | · Phi Gamma Nu | | · Sailing Club | · Sigma Kappa Sorority | · Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority | · Student Personnel Association | | · the Resident's Action Council | · University Program Council |
