HOW DO I ADD OR DROP A CLASS?

Adding a class:
You may add a class via Web Registration only during the first 8 calendar days of the quarter. However, please note that departments or individual instructors may close registration for their courses prior to the eighth day. After the eighth day of the quarter, you may add a class only with instructor permission. For classes requiring the instructor’s permission, you will need to obtain a permission slip from the instructor or departmental representative and then return the slip to the office indicated on the slip (in most cases, the Registrar’s Windows in Chubb Hall) for final processing.

Dropping a class: You may use TRIPS or Web registration to drop any class through the fifth week (defined as the 35th calendar day) of the quarter. If you drop a class during the first 15 calendar days of the quarter, there will be no record of that class on your academic record. If you drop a class after the 15th calendar day of the quarter, your instructor will assign either a grade of Withdrawal Passing (WP) or Withdrawal Failing (WF), indicating your progress at the time the class was dropped. Although grades of WP and WF do not affect your g.p.a., the grades do appear on your DARS reports and official transcript.

WHAT IF I WANT TO ADD A CLASS THAT IS FULL OR REQUIRES INSTRUCTOR PERMISSION?

Permission (pink) slips
: If you wish to add a class section that is listed as “full” or “instructor permission required” on TRIPS and Web Registration, you must contact the instructor of the course to request permission to enroll in the course. If the instructor agrees to allow you to register for the course, he/she must give you a signed Class Permission form and must check the section of the form indicating his/her approval for one or more of the following reasons:

  1. “Permission is a prerequisite and student has obtained permission from department/instructor to enroll in class.”
  2. “Student does not meet prerequisites but has permission to enroll in class and enforced prerequisites are being waived.”
  3. “Class is full but student has permission to enroll in class.”
  4. “Permission to add class after 8th day.”
  5. “Student has reached maximum repeat/retake limit but has received permission to enroll in class and maximum repeat/retake limit is being waived.”

To complete the registration process, you must then return the signed form to the Registrar Services Windows no later than the 15th calendar day of the quarter.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DROP A CLASS?

If you have financial aid: If you receive financial aid or veterans benefits, or are a student athlete, you must carry a minimum of 12 quarter hours to be considered eligible. If you drop below 12 quarter hours, you will have a deficit. In order to correct this deficit, you will have to make up the number of credits below 12 that you do not complete. In most cases, you would have to make up the hours by taking and earning more than 12 credits in the subsequent quarters.

If you have not had a deficit previously, you will be put on SAP notice (SAP = Satisfactory Academic Progress) and will have a year to make up the deficit. Those who have been put on notice previously risk the loss of financial aid. For additional information, click here.

If you have an academic scholarship: Many scholarships require students to complete 16 hours a quarter. If you drop below this, you could end up having to pay money back. Click here for additional information. If you don’t know the requirements for your scholarship, contact Financial Aid (593-4141) and talk with the advisor for scholarships.

HOW DO I CANCEL MY REGISTRATION OR WITHDRAW FROM THE UNIVERSITY (DROPPING ALL CLASSES)?

Cancellation before classes have begun
: Cancellation of registration is defined as dropping all classes before the first day of classes. You may do this by using Web Registration, or you can call or visit the registrar’s office or the student services office of your college to obtain a cancellation of registration form, which you then complete and return to the registrar’s office. If you officially withdraw from the university before the first day of classes, you are entitled to a 100 percent refund of registration fees.

Withdrawal after classes have begun: Withdrawal from the university is defined as dropping all classes on or after the first day of classes and no later than the day before the last day of classes for the quarter or summer subterm. Withdrawal is not permitted on or after the last day of classes. Withdrawal may not be done using Web Registration. To withdraw from the university after classes have begun, you must apply for withdrawal by completing a withdrawal request form obtained from the student services office of your college. When the request has been approved by the college’s student services office and housing, your withdrawal is processed by the registrar’s office, which grants an official withdrawal after determining that all obligations to the university have been met. If you officially withdrawal from the university during the first 15 calendar days of the quarter, you are entitled to an 80 percent refund if your registration fees were paid in full. If you withdraw from the university after the first 15 calendar days of classes, you are not entitled to a refund of registration fees.

WHAT IS A RAC?

Registration Access Code (RAC): Your Registration Access Code (RAC) is a four-digit number that is needed for accessing Web Registration. Your RAC changes quarterly. As a new student, you are given your first RAC at Precollege orientation. Thereafter, your RAC is printed on your DARS report for preregistration, student class schedule, and grade report. Please remember that your RAC is confidential information and, therefore, cannot be released over the telephone or through email. If you have lost your RAC, you may receive your RAC in person by showing a photo identification card at the student services office in your college or the Registrar’s Office in Chubb Hall.
